Pretty mediocre effort from me. No paddling and all biking will do that. August 26 marks the start of 2014 training so we will see what kind of launching point it puts me at for next time. Nothing like crap and knowing you can do better to get some motivation in.

Awfully long for what should have been an easy shakedown race and just a preview for USSSC. No drink system was a bit of an issue too. Fun little race against Erik Wermus near the end.

Good speed cruise with the K1 crowd. I felt good and was able to pace kids taking the season a whole lot more seriously than I was. Maybe some got hooked on ski racing too; Alex Brent says maybe...

Raced in the Think EZE which I still had from Ski to Sea last Sunday. ((58m18s)/(50m50s))*100-100 results in 14% back from race leader which is below the EZE's optimal speed (and the pace I should be at). Extrapolating my time in an Uno Max I would have got a 54:54 which means the repo man would have beat me. Uh-oh.

Very, very bad night for a K1.

I hadn't had a good training session in a week. I somehow fell in more than the required amount. While floating in the water, I decided I had enough and just went for a paddle. The next day in my K1, I decided to backtrack to my last 3 star workout. It seemed to get training back on track. Just an unfortunate night because all the superstars were on hand to have what should have been a great race.

Nic showed up which was the shocker of the night. Same ol same ol for this race. Surprisingly fast sprint with relatively low effort. Steady all the way around the allegedly 7 k course. Decided to go for the finish way early which only kind of paid off; I had open water on Shane at one point but the real finish happened within 100m of the dock where it was the race to hold him off at the finish.

Shane legit won that race. No excuses or stories on how or why I could have done better. High effort throughout and catching back up to Eric after he somehow got away near the Hamber lighthouse left nothing in the tank for the finish that was supposed to happen 500m out and be sustained to the finish. Finish ended up being only 200m and I had to drop off early.

Raced a Think eze. Dion pulled a textbook wash riding scum move and got a free ride for a good 10 minutes. Did my best to hand on to a wave like 10 sets back. I wish I brought my GPS because there would have been some interesting data from that race.

No drink system, no warm up, no ideal paddle clothing, no problem. I set a goal of top 5 this morning and coming in 5th in class was perfect. Fast wash ride down to Cates park with Gareth and Jan, then I got tired and waited for Shane and Kirk. Comfortable wash ride until about 2000m after the 180° turn, then I got tired again and took my own line in to Admiralty point. Easy finish in to the cove with Warren and Dean.

We need Gareth back so the middle of the race is a high-speed grind and not a wash riding party with only me invited.

Started on my own near shore after a last minute foot rest adjustment. Long start sprint to rejoin the group. Good wash ride for a several k until the pace fell below what it should have been. Accelerated off on my own and made chase for the OC6. Never caught up but instead succumbed to some mad pain and was caught by the Fasts and Jeff and Katja to finish farily close together. Good effort.

Not a very fun TT. Felt like I lacked connection for a major portion of it. Wasn't thinking about tech, was thinking about just going hard. Working hard does not always equal high speed. Great training session after though.

What a way to end the (skingle ski racing) season. "Won" the hotspot and won the race.

Basic race summary; I underestimated Dion's ability to start and Dion underestimated my ability to finish.

Warren was a man on fire and actually pulled a couple accelerations during the race. Pace stayed fast throughout. Dion got really sneaky a couple times through the race and accelerated up agead to get Warren and I, who were flanking him, to accelerate with him. Dion then dropped back and sat on the v-wash for a good while until somebody realized what was going on and a put a stop to it... then he would do it again.

Just to be clear, this race was around "Grey Rocks Island" as described by the map detailing the race course. The actual "Grey Rocks" formation is described as a "rocky shoal" http://www.deepcovekayak.com/map/grey-rocks/ . A shoal is further defined as "a place where a sea, river, or other body of water is shallow" or "a sandbank or sand bar in the bed of a body of water, especially one that is exposed above the surface of the water at low tide" http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/shoal . Therefore, a shoal is navigable.

Other than that, pretty fast TT by me. Much better than my last race 2 weeks ago when I couldn't get my boat adjusted right. Hip positioning felt excellent and the boat was moving well except for the portions closer to shore when the reflected waves made staying stable and having good boat roll difficult. I tried not to wash ride the tugboat sized waves from Shane and Dion at the finish but what can you do when a freight train rolls by.

Literally being chased by a freight train most of the race.

A solid race nonetheless. Time was helped by some serious wash provided by the chase boat who were too busy trying to get video of Sean paddling to notice the nice boost to my speed they were giving me.

After floundering about attempting to do a remount and losing my paddle in the process, I began the race with a significant handicap. I hope I didn't scare the slower folk too bad when I charged up to the front. Caught John by Boulder and rested on his wash until Roche Point. Told John that I would be accelerating to catch the lead group after I made the turn around the lighthouse and that he should come for the ride; unfortunately, I took the corner quickly and John didn't. On the charge up to the lead group, I made up 75% of the distance on my own and 25% from some lucky waves provided by the chase boat. It's not cheating because I started way behind. Back up with the group and competitive by Maple Beach where I tapered off and had an almost pleasant paddle back to the cove with Ty and the Fitz double. The early sprint at the finish was about 350m out and seemed to have scared them off. I still can't believe that I made up so much ground after that start. Paddling race, not swimming.
