The Oosik Classic Ski Race is the Denali Nordic Ski Club's largest—and only—annual fundraiser. Since its inception in 2004, the event has grown from 200 participants to a capped 800 skiers, selling out every year (except during Covid). Skiers from across Alaska—and even beyond—gather to celebrate the end of ski season and the arrival of spring in this vibrant, community-centered event.
The Oosik Classic is about more than just competition. While we do attract talented racers, most participants join for the fun, dressing up in costumes and sharing their love of Nordic skiing. The course offers options for skiers of all levels, with 10, 25, and 50-kilometer tracks. The recreational skiers, in particular, bring creativity and energy, giving the Oosik its unique and celebrated reputation.
Community involvement is at the heart of the event. Local volunteers and visitors set up "bandit aid stations" along the route, cheering on skiers and adding to the festive atmosphere. Proceeds from the race directly support the Denali Nordic Ski Club's mission to groom, maintain, and develop trails for everyone to enjoy.
Funds also go toward supporting the Talkeetna Junior Nordic program, helping children transition from walkers to skiers. Dedicated parents and volunteers make this program possible, fueled by cocoa, cookies, and the joy of seeing young skiers progress.
