Event notes

Let's have fun on the trails and celebrate Halloween by going through the 2.25 mile long, 110 year old, super creepy, Snoqualmie Tunnel just days before it closes for the winter. Then up to an alpine lake through all the beautiful fall colors and then finish by going through that creepy tunnel again! Culturally respectful and non-gory costumes highly encouraged. And no we won't be adding anything scary to the tunnel, it's already scary enough as it is. With only 1800 feet of elevation gain and with slightly more than half the course on smooth gravel trail we feel like this is an excellent course for folks who are new to trail running and looking to ease into the sport as well as more experienced folks looking for a fast course or just to have fun. Also by giving folks up to 7.5 hours to complete the course folks would only have to average slightly over two miles per hour meaning that most folks could walk the entire route and still finish on time. We think there's something for everyone with this event and we want everyone to feel welcome and able to take their time while enjoying this beautiful place!

This run/hike will not be a typical “race” and we will not be posting public results. We will time participants for tracking and safety reasons, and folks can still ask us if they want to know their time. But our overall goal with choosing not to post public results for this one is to de-emphasize the competitive element of this event and to highlight the opportunity for mindful recreation. We’d love for you to have time to stop and enjoy Annette Lake, to enjoy socializing and to find moments to really appreciate the natural environment.

The Hyak Halloween 25K takes place on Snoqualmie Tribe Ancestral Lands. The tribe has requested that folks who use their lands for recreation take care and be mindful of their impacts. From their July 2021 press release “The Tribe welcomes those who respectfully enjoy our beautiful ancestral lands,” said McKenna Sweet Dorman, a Snoqualmie Tribal Member who serves as the assistant director of governmental affairs & special projects with the Tribe. “Unfortunately, because of the exponential increase in outdoor recreation coupled with the selfish and destructive practices of recreators who are unaware, these lands are being loved to death. The Tribe is asking its neighbors to show respect when interacting with these lands so that future generations may also experience their unique beauty. The Snoqualmie Tribe encourages Washingtonians to heal past damage and avoid future impacts through the practice of appropriate land acknowledgment, which includes educating themselves about the lands’ history and connection to the Snoqualmie People, recreating in moderation, respecting rules about littering and staying on designated trails, and supporting the Snoqualmie Tribe’s stewardship and education efforts.” For members of the Snoqualmie Tribe we will waive the race entry fee, please email us at info@rainshadowrunning.com
