The West Deptford Police Department K-9 Unit was established in the early 1980’s when the department acquired a German Shepherd patrol dog named Mountain. In 2007, the WDPD again re-instituted the K-9 Unit and purchased a German Shepherd named Judge. Judge was handled by Sergeant Mike Franks. Judge was trained in patrol and narcotics detection. Judge served the residents of West Deptford and the surrounding communities from 2007 until his retirement in 2013. Following Judge, the K-9 Unit again expanded. The Unit purchased a German Shepherd named Mako. Mako, retired in 2017 and is living with his handler K-9 Officer Joe LaMalfa. In 2013, the WDPD purchased a Belgian Malinois named Tazor to fill the vacancy left by Judge. Tazor is trained in patrol and narcotics detection and is currently handled by Corporal Mike Franks. In 2015, the K-9 Unit selected Officer Fred Vergara who was partnered with a Belgian Malinois named Reaper. Reaper is trained in patrol and narcotics detection. In 2017, the Unit added a fourth Officer, K-9 Officer Jimmy Creedon and his partner Steel. K-9 Officer LaMalfa also was assigned his new partner Chino. Both new dogs are trained in patrol and narcotics detection. The K-9 Unit operates solely on donations and fundraisers held by K-9 Unit members.
Judge's Jog is named in honor of K-9 Judge whom fought a courageous battle against Cushing's Disease. Upon the realization of Judge's deteriorating health, Corporal Franks made the heart wrenching decision to put Judge down.
This race is sponsored by the Colonial Café'. The after race celebration will be held at the Colonial Cafe', located at 1 Colonial Avenue.
