After 2week's hiatus, the Longwood Brewery criterium made a welcome return to Boxwood.Tonight 14 started. The first 2 laps of the 47 km race were neutralized, but Justin Mark took off and had to be flagged in before the start proper. Among the starters were 5 Vipyrs, 2 Steed cycles! lone riders from Arrowsmith and Cycle Therapy and 5 from MIVA - making a good turnout for early August.
The early laps were very fast as the Vipyrs youth squad, first James Grant, then Brodie Hay and, finally, Mark Grant set a rapid pace with the bunch strung out behind. MIVA's Kyle Waring, just back from several week's holiday in the Orient, together with Mike McCarny, Jessica Reynolds and Mike Gill were dropped by the 4th. lap, with The two Mikes able to stay with the bunch as they were caught. But Jessica struggled to stay with the pack and was dropped twice more. Kyle, with zero miles in his legs for many weeks rode most of the race alone and had trouble staying with the bunch each time he was caught. Very creditably, he did Bhangra on to finish several laps down.
The first prime was taken by James Grant from brother, Mark. And then Phil Birrer picked up the pace. The Grant brothers then moved to the front and continued to drive the pack until the halfway point in the race, when everyone sat up and simply cruised around for a lap or so.
As the horn sounded for the second prime, Justin Mark came to the front and stayed there the entire lap to take the sprint from Iain Hay.
The next 7 laps saw the bunch moving well and just before the third prime Janna Gillick and Carey Mark came to the front as the pace picked up. All were together with one lap leftbefore prime 3 but Justin again proved his sprinting ability by edging Iain a second time.
With 10 laps left, the pack re-formed and stayed that way until the final flag, with Justin winning from the Vipyrsl quartette of James, Iain, Mark and Brodie. 5th. was Mike Sevcov who for once had done little work. Janna Gillick was 6th.
