Main Race [12Km]:
Matagarup Challenge – Long Course Description
Start - Le Mans
Begin by paddling directly off the beach to the marker out front. Make a sharp right turn and head towards Herrison Island, keeping all red spit posts on your right.
Causeway Bridge & On the Point Restaurant
Continue paddling towards the Causeway Bridge, passing underneath. Just before reaching On the Point Restaurant, you'll encounter a red spit post. Navigate around it clockwise (keep it on your right).
Portage (Div 1 & 2 and Prize Contenders Only)
After rounding the spit post and returning through the Causeway Bridge, proceed towards the left bank where a Dr Ben Hewitt portage flag is located. Divisions 1 & 2 and those competing for prize money must portage—exit your boat and carry it around the flag.
Claisebrook Inlet
Head by the shortest route to Claisebrook Inlet. There is a shallow but navigable channel close to the bank. Inside the inlet, paddle around the buoy clockwise (keep it on your right).
Return to Warndoolier Reserve
Exit the inlet and paddle back toward Warndoolier Reserve. Stay on the left side of the river and pass through the westernmost (left) bridge span.
Second Portage (Div 1 & 2 and Prize Contenders Only)
Proceed to the two Dr Ben Hewitt flags downstream of the start area. Div 1 & 2 paddlers and prize contenders must pass between the left bank and both flags, whilst between the two flags you must exit your craft, and place at least one foot on the ground before crossing the river to the right bank (Belmont Racecourse).
Upriver to Water Ski Area
Cross the main boating channel—give way to other river craft. Continue upriver by any route (no need to follow channel markers) past the Belmont Racecourse bend to the edge of the water ski area.
Buoy Turn
Just downstream of the ski area, turn anti-clockwise around two buoys. Again, be cautious when crossing the main boat channel and give way to other river users.
Downstream to Finish
Paddle downstream, keeping all red (port) channel markers on your left. Avoid the area directly in front of the Maylands Yacht Club, especially around 09:00 when their junior sailing program begins.
Finish Line
Finish between the beach and the first red mooring buoy. Only cross the finish line when you are completing the race.
