The iconic Menai Strait has tested sailors and paddlers for many years, it has a big and justified reputation. Since 2010 there have been numerous semi official paddling challenges along different stretches with participants able to submit their details to the Performance Sea Kayak website. Over 27th and 28th June we will run a distance course and a technical course. Both courses are based on tried and tested routes that are listed on the Performance Sea Kayak website.
27th June. The DISTANCE challenge will run with the incoming tide and will be approximately 20km long. All entrants will have the chance to complete the course and conquer the Strait.
28th June. The TECHNICAL course will run around low water slack in the area between the two road bridges, the area known as The Swellies. Paddle boarders in the non race SUP category will paddle a course of approximately 4.75 km. Kayaks, skis, racing SUP's will paddle around a course measuring approximately 10km. Careful route choice will be required to avoid unhelpful currents.
Open to all padders aged 18 years old or over on 1 Jan 2020. To simplify age categories we are only using two, 18-59 and 60 plus.
Craft criteria
Sea Kayaks - must be 15' or longer, have a closed cockpit with sealed bulkheads fitted hatches. Can be plastic or composite, expedition kayak or fast sea kayak.
Skis (S1) - must be 16' or longer, fitted with a self bail system, moulded seat and steering peddles.
Race SUP - a solo paddled inflatable, or rigid board measuring 12’6 or longer.
Non race SUP - a solo paddled inflatable or rigid board measuring less than 12’6.
