The Orcas Island 100 mile is unique in the trail running world, with old-growth forests, tough climbs, and spectacular views of surrounding islands, mountains, and Puget Sound, but what truly sets it apart is the chance to hang out all weekend on a gorgeous island with your trail runner friends. But don't underestimate the difficulty of this race! Cold, wet, dark, and steep this race is not for the faint of heart. With it's inception in 2016, this race has quickly gained a reputation as having an old school, laid back, grassroots vibe to it. Because runners do four 25 mile loops, the aid station volunteers get to know the runners, the runners look forward to seeing the friendly aid station volunteers, the crews get to know the volunteers, the staff bonds with each runner, you get the picture! By the end of the weekend, we all feel like family and we guarantee you will cry at the awards ceremony (at least once).
Pacers are Now Allowed
For safety reasons we've decided to now allow pacers for all runners, starting at mile 25. We had never allowed them before to make the race harder. simpler and to reduce the ease in which some runners could cheat by having their pacers carry stuff for them. We feel like safety outweighs all those other concerns... by a lot. But we really don't want to hear about runners get stuff from their pacers -- unless they are at an aid station or it's an emergency. Runners who get aid from their pacers (or crew) any where other than at an aid station can be disqualified as it's unfair advantage and against our rules.
No pacers before mile 25. And no muleing aka carrying stuff for your runner or giving your runner anything except at aid stations.
