Island Iron (Cadboro Bay) OC6 Races - one of the most beautiful AND challenging CORA Cup Races.

Saturday, June 6, 2026

 

Distances:

  • short course - 7 km - Cadboro Bay and Oak Bay
  • long course - 17 to 18 km - beach start from Cadboro Bay, south to Oak Bay marina, east to Discovery Island, north to yellow cardinal marker (watch out for kelp!!), then west, crossing Baynes Channel (strong current!!), returning to Cadboro Bay. Long course map link.  **This is the preferred course, but may change on race day depending on conditions.

 

Schedule:

  • 8:30 a.m. - check-in opens
  • 9:00 a.m. - mandatory steers' meeting for short course
  • 9:30 a.m. - short course race start
  • 10:30 a.m. - mandatory steers' meeting for long course - Women and Mixed 50+, 60+, 70+
  • 11:00 a.m. - Women and Mixed 50+, 60+, 70+ race start
  • 12:30 p.m. - Mandatory steers' meeting for long course - Men and Mixed Open, 40+
  • 1:00 p.m. - Men and Mixed Open, 40+ race start

CORA Cup:

  • Island Iron is a CORA cup race. Register your team name and category exactly the same for all CORA Cup races
  • Crews racing in spec canoes are welcome to participate, but only crews racing in unlimiteds are eligible for CORA Cup points.
     

Safety:

  • All canoes must have spray skirts, two bailers and six Canadian Coast Guard approved PFDs.
  • Paddlers racing the long course must have completed a huli drill within the last year.
  • All steers must attend the steers/safety meeting in order to race
  • There will be three safety boats on the course.
  • Safety is paramount. Race course may change at any time, including during the race, depending on wind and weather.
     

CORA Membership and waiver:

 

Race Location and Parking:

  • Cadboro-Gyro Park is located at the end of Sinclair Road (main parking lot). Parking is free in main lot.
  • Parking is limited, paddlers are encouraged to carpool
  • No parking is allowed on grass after trailers are unloaded.
  • Trailer drivers arriving Friday should contact latitude48races@gmail.com for information on overnight parking.

 

Food

  • Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase.
  • Lunch is NOT provided. There will be food trucks, in addition to Moka Coffeehouse, Thai Lemongrass, Smugglers' Cover Pub, Peppers' grocery store.
     

Additional information:

  • Withdrawal fee of $15 for any cancellations to cover administrative fees.
  • Don't forget to register for the 12 km Cadborosaurus Chase on Sunday, June 7.
