Event notes
If you are racing a dog adopted from It's a Dog's Life, please answer YES below to be eligible for "The Cup".
"Rain date" for the event is Sunday, March 4, in case of weather bad enough to prevent highway travel.
Follow Facebook page (Skijor Kenora - Mushin' for Mutts) for details on the race, and for additional social events and fun runs planned for Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday morning.
Racers in the Nod to the Iditarod 8km will be racing for a cash purse of $450, and can use one or two dogs in either the skijor or kicksled class. Tentative payout for each class is $100 for 1st, $75 for 2nd, $50 for third. If the classes do not have 3 competitors, the unused prize money will be re-distributed to the winners in both classes. Big thank you to the Kenora Hospitality Alliance stayinkenora.com for sponsoring the Nod to the Iditarod. Teams should be conditioned to handle the two 4 km laps on hilly, groomed woodsy trails.
Racers in the Growler Howler 4 km and the Sultana Gold Rush Mush 1.5 km will be racing for beer and other donated prizes. There are separate classes for ski and sled, and for 1 and 2 dog teams. Big thank you to Lake of the Woods Brewing Company for sponsoring these races. The 4 km race is ideal for intermediate teams who can handle hilly, groomed, woodsy trails. The 1.5 km race is meant for beginner teams, or those coming off injuries, or or those with white whiskers who still want to be part of the fun. The first half is gradual uphill, and the 2nd half is downhill. No head-on meets for any of these trails.
The Bearheart Kids' Dog Derby is not competitive, but teams will be timed for their own fun. Each kid will get a prize from sponsor Bearheart Boutique. Skiing parents or a volunteer skier can accompany kids on the trail if needed. Older kids/youth who want to race and can handle their dog and the trail well are welcome to enter one of the 'adult' races where they will get root beer and other prizes.
