The Matthewes Cup

The Matthewes Cup or Matthewes Challenge annual handicap style kayak race is run by the Arawa Canoe Club on Lyttelton Harbour. The Trophy is potentially the oldest Kayaking Title in New Zealand, and commemorates what was possibly the first ever formal canoe race in held in New Zealand in 1877!

Approx 8km Course - Around Quail Island.
Handicap Race - All competitors have a chance at the title.
Surfskis and multisport boats only.
Free Registration (online) - Donation entry fee on the day.
Race Breifing at 6.30pm in the car park at Naval Point Yacht Club
Start/Finish (Weather depending) at Corsair Bay.

Race History:

In 1877, Fuch Ballach won a canoe race held on Lyttelton Harbour, paddling a craft owned by R.H. Matthewes (Yes this is the correct spelling). So the trophy is named after the winning boat owner, not the actual winner!

In the late 1960s, the descendants of the original winner donated the Matthewes Trophy to Arawa Canoe Club. It was decided, by the Club, to hold an annual race for the trophy on Lyttelton Harbour. Traditionally the race is held as a closed handicap race for all competitors. Therefore anyone racing had a chance of winning.
