Race report

Fun short course racing tonight. We did four loops of a short (< 2km) loop between Jericho and RVYC.

It was a downwind start so we got to jump on the bump right away then surf down to RVYC. Next there was a short leg with the waves coming from the side, and then upwind back to Jericho.

The chase pack was tight to the finish (including Chris for the first 3 laps) which was cool to see.

Race report

Criteriums are challenging. Criteriums in a double are extra challenging!

Wes was off in a class by himself tonight leaving us to duel with Katja and Jeff, with Daryl and Seth hanging on. The wide turn radius of the double skis left plenty of room for Daryl and Seth to sneak in, apex the corner and jump back on our wash for the next leg. I let it happen for the first half of the race then started my defence. On turn 3 we were on the outside of Jeff and Katja, Daryl and Seth so I backed it down, cut behind the pack to get the inside line, then powered up beside the pack to control the line. The goal was to keep everyone outside and force the singles to do the wider turn of the doubles. It generally worked (Seth got squeezed out, Daryl hung back on a safe spot in the wash). For the last turn the singles used their shorter turn radius to get inside again so I kept the turn wide and forced them to sprint to reconnect with our wash. Finished with an epic sprint against J&K.

Race report

Talk about fun, tight racing!

As usual I started a bit back so that I wouldn't have OC1s and SUPs drifting into me. Big mistake! Daryl was on fire and took off like a bat out of hell. I had to work hard to catch him, along with Chris, Trista and Brian. We had a big pack and someone was always challenging for the lead. At any given time, Daryl, Bob, Conner, Brian and Trista, and I all led the pack. Anytime I backed it down a bit, someone would come charging up. It was great!

Race report

More tight doubles racing tonight. We took turns leading the pack with Katja and Jeff, with each boat having their strong moments. We definitely suffered in the side chop and bigger boat waves...having a 3 yr old in the boat makes things a bit more challenging. :)

Jeff and Katja opened up a good lead going through the mess near Hamber, but backed it down at the entrance to Deep Cove so we could catch up, and have a strong finish together. Always fun racing with them!

Race report

I accidentally gave everyone a head start, but it was all good in the end. Found myself getting squeezed on the line between OC1s on one side and a drifting surfski on the other, so I was behind the line and back paddling when the gun went. Whoops!

I settled in to a zone 3 effort and reeled in Chris at the first turn, then slowly pulled away from him on the second leg. It took until the end of the first loop to close the gap on Brian and Trista. Lucky for me there were constraints on the turn that affected their turn and gave me an opportunity to sprint up and close a 2 boat length gap. Brian started to panic when he realized I was right behind them which made it easier to pull up to their wash, then continue past them. Despite having much wider turns, they stuck with me right to the end. Great racing!

Race report

Once again, 'Round Bowen kicked my @ss! I had a strong first 20 kms but hit a wall and couldn't keep it going.

I suspect there are two parts to the failure:
1) I should have trained a bit more for the distance
2) I should have had some calories in addition to the electrolytes in my hydration

Loic had a fantastic race and answered every challenge that Wes and I threw at him early on.

I'm stunned that Wes not only closed the gap on him, but put a few more minutes in there for good measure. Well done Wes!

Race report

It was a fun race tonight. Bob and I agreed to take it easy tonight because the Round Bowen race is coming up. Consequently we had a nice friendly chase pack (Mike and Ash were off by themselves at the front) including me, Bob, Conner and Trevor. Everything was fine until the last couple kilometres when we approached the red mark. Bob and I both intended to shoot the gap between a sea kayak and the red mark....then the gap disappeared and we ended up sideways on the red mark getting pushed to the wrong side by the current. Important reminder: warn the people that you're passing! :D

Conner and Trevor stayed clear of the chaos and snatched victory.

Fun race tonight. I'd planned to take it easy and target a HR around 150bpm, but Trista and Brian were darn quick off the line so I had to bump it up a bit (158bpm) to pace them.

Had a good chuckle during the race when the chase pack aimed for the wrong mark, then realized I knew where I was going when the safety boat came by. :D

We had a much better start and got clear of the chase pack before rounding the 5 knot can tonight, which was a definite improvement. Alex was extra wiggly tonight which impacted our power and speed a bit. The cherry on top was after giving Bob plenty of room to get around the mark in Belcarra Bay, he still couldn't turn tighter than a 25' double. Sorry Bob, next time I'm running you into the mark.

Race report

Second race in the V10 Double as a family. Small improvement on our start this week but got squeezed out as the fleet compressed going through the moored boats. Thought for sure that Tye and Ruby were going to run right over us at the 100m mark so we backed down, waited for a gap.

Once we got moving and didn't have to worry about smacking paddles (or boats), our pace was pretty good and proceeded to reel in the chase pack, then pick off Bob and Wes when they fell off the lead pack (Gareth, Katja and Jeff). Probably wouldn't have gotten Wes but he found a rock while going around one of the islands. Ouch!

A few more races and maybe we'll be able to challenge Katja and Jeff. :)

First time paddling the V10 Double as a family. In order to fit Alex, we took out the rear footboard and added some padding to use the rear footwell as a rear facing seat. So far, it's working great!

We had a pretty tentative start but eventually got our speed up and moved through the pack. The V10D is not meant for tight turns so we would lose ground every corner, then catch up and pass during the straights...repeat for 6 x 1km pieces. ;) Couldn't quite catch Bob and Wes...maybe next week.

Easy paddle tonight as the usual suspects (Dave, Bob, Lucas, Chris, Warren, etc.) were are MIA.

Race report

Tough time trial tonight. Knowing that Lucas would be the main challenge tonight (sorry Bob), I started behind Lucas and used the first 500m to close the gap, then get even with him. From there I kept working any bumps or flat stretches I could find to try and pull ahead. Lucas wasn't giving up though, every push was answered and by the time we reached Jug island, there wasn't more than a boat length between us. I hoped to break him coming out of the island but instead he surged up beside me as we reeled in all but one paddler in front of us. We paddled side by side all the way back. As we approached the final 500m, the safety boat cheered Lucas on and he started his finish push. Luckily I still had something in reserve and was able to surge ahead a little bit. :)

There is a disturbance in the force...and their names are Lucas and Seth.

Lucas, who I've never seen race before, hopped on a V12 last night and hung with the lead pack the whole race. If Bob and I hadn't been wash riding Jeff and Katja's double, he might have been strong enough to beat us.

Meanwhile Seth was mixing it up with the chase pack and throwing it down with some very experienced paddlers.

Watch out guys, these two are going to put us in the hurt locker this summer!

Learned my lesson from the past few races...Bob is too strong to take lightly. I can't get away with pulling the pack all the time and still out sprint everyone at the finish. :)

Instead I let Bob take turns pulling, and backed it down a bit late in the race to rest a bit before the final sprint. :D

Race report

The westerly filled in, and did not fade so we had some fun racing tonight! I towed Bob (aka Wash Riding Scum) upwind to the second dolphin, then we had an epic surf battle to the finish. In the end, Bob managed to squeak out a boat length lead at the final turn mark and I couldn't get past him.

Congratulations on your first ever win Bob! Next time I won't be sandbagging with my 10 year old V10 Performance. ;)

Race report

Still not fit but at least I'm improving. At the Jericho race I was ~1min slower than The Magus, this time I was ~2min faster than him.

I drew Chris off and we tried to get around David by taking a less direct course that got us out of the current a bit. Unfortunately Mike and James were pulling hard so we didn't reap the benefits. Probably should have just drafted and done a sprint finish but it's early in the season and we need the volume anyway. :)

Race report

A fun night on English bay. Even though I know better, I decided to try out a new blade for tonight's race and used Chris' Jantex Gamma Rio. Nice catch and easy exit but the shaft felt really weird and slippery. Had to grip a lot more than I'm used to with my Epic which lead to forearm cramps mid way through the race. Dave and Daphne were super strong and paddled away while tried to get my groove back. At least I held off Warren, Chris and Ty! Great racing everyone!.

Race report

Great westerly breeze in the bay today with some really nice bumps...but the course took us into sheltered water instead. :(

It's unfortunate but from a safety POV it makes sense.

We had a following swell at the start so the first 250m had Chris, Warren, Norm, Dion and I running side by side on the bumps. Then we passed under Burrard bridge and flatwater fitness took over with Chris and Warren falling back, Dion getting dropped hard and Norm completely vanishing.

There were little bumps to ride most of the way down to Science World, some of which were courtesy of the safety boat. Thanks Jim!

The return trip was a grind but we got to finish by pushing out past the mouth of False Creek, rounding the red mark and surfing back to the finish line. This is where I found out I've been putting to much pressure on the balls of my feet for leg drive...snapped off a pedal on the last leg! Limited steering makes for interesting surfing!

First Big Chop of the season! It was nice to be back out in English Bay with some great competition. Dave and Daphne brought their A game (but thankfully forgot a non-sprint blade for Daphne) and kept me honest the entire time. My saving grace was that they couldn't change gears effectively while using large wing sprint blades. :)

Looking forward to a rematch!

Race report

This is one of those races where the unexpected hit hard. Forecast wasn't for anything out of control (10-15 knots from the east, clocking around to SW 15-18 knots) so I wasn't expecting much in the way of wind or waves between Vanier Park and QC.

The first loop out to QC and back was tame...flat water, minimal wind, very little bump. Near the midway point of the second loop I started to noticed some decent puffs were cannonballing out of Stanley Park. Then I turned at QC and started the last upwind leg. I'd chosen a course tucked into shore to get out of the wind and current for the return trip. First I noticed that I was getting sand in my eyes. Then I started seeing loose twisters on the water. Finally I got nailed by some very strong breeze (35-40 knots) which dropped me down to 4km/h of headway. Made it back but there were a few moments where I imagined Daryl's carbon Ion rolling downwind all the way to Nanaimo...I'd forgotten to put a leash on my borrowed boat!

Race report

That was entertaining! Tonight was the no-cup Doubles Championship...Bob and Warren turned a V10 Double into a rocket ship. I had a pretty fast start and was cruising along nicely when they blew by me like I was standing still. I only caught them when they decided to back down and let me catch up.

They toyed with me until the return from Hamber Island where Bob decided we should do 1 min intervals. Even when given a head start I could barely hold onto their wash! Awesome paddle guys!

Race report

You know you're Canadian when you're given a yellow number (i.e. top 20) with a free pass to line up first row and you still let yourself get squeezed back to the second row because you don't want to interfere with the elite paddlers. ;)

That said, still had a decent start and got to the hotspot in good company with Greg, Wes and Teneale. Unfortunately I seem to have forgotten how to surf the smaller stuff and not only did Greg and Wes take off, but Gareth, Jan, Teneale, and Cameron passed me all to quickly. Luckily the wind filled in closer to the point and I was able to pass Jan and Teneale.

A good line into the back eddy allowed me to close Gareth's 10 length lead and enter the slough side by side. We cruised in together until about 250m from the finish. I saw his bow surge and rated up (thanks Kenny!) to pull ahead. Gareth backed down and I eased up. Then he surged a second time so I rated up and kept at it until the finish, narrowly edging him out. Fun stuff!

Race report

Nothing like having the big guns come out to humble you.

Ken and Macca came out to play and put the hurt on all of us. The only reason we got ahead was that they decided to switch boats after the first lap. One might think that it's bad enough they beat us while doing a boat swap...they were also paddling a Think Ace and a Think Evo II. Yes, we were chasing short, fat surfskis with our narrow, tippy ones!

Well done lads, you're putting us in our place. :)

Race report

Fun times tonight. All surfski paddlers started in deep water beside their boats and had to do a remount at the start horn. Definitely separates those who are comfortable with their remounts from those who aren't. Consequently, Wes gave me a huge lead at the start. :)

Had a solid remount (not the fastest but not too slow) and passed everyone but Ken Rice by the 200m mark. Ken and I paddled side by side until midway to Lone Rock where I was able to point out all the turns he needed to make, and he promptly dropped me.

Wes eventually caught up and we took turns leading until Raccoon Island where he opened up a 3 boat gap. After rounding the island I decide I wasn't going to give up and sprinted up beside him again with Jamie close behind me. Coming into Jug Island, I decided my best bet was to force the next remount in front of the camera boat and hope that Wes got distracted and gave me a lead. Didn't work, we left together but we did drop Jamie in the chaos.

Race report

As always, this race kicked my butt.

Had a solid start, not too fast, and formed up a lead pack with Wes and Ken but it didn't take long for Ken to pick up the pace and open up a gap. Wes tried to go with him but knowing how this race has hurt me before, I held my pace and continued to cruise.

Wes opened up a few boat length lead on the north side but I managed to play the current and waves to erase it and we paddled side by side right up to Cape Roger Curtis. The west side of Bowen was a slow grind...barely holder 9.5 km/h for a large part of it.

The south side got fun with some nice 2-4' swells coming through with the occasional 6'. Had nice surf runs all the way to the SW corner then smaller runs heading north again. Tried to reel in Wes but the dreaded forearm cramps came back again and I couldn't put full power into my stroke. Watched Wes open a two boat length lead to 4 minutes. Ouch.

Next time!

Race report

Fun race tonight. I started on the wrong side, behind a bunch of SUPs, and still had fun. Hugh led the pack off the line towards 2nd beach. I squeaked through a gap and slowly started reeling in the lead pack. With Round Bowen on Saturday, I didn't want to push too hard so I kept a reasonable effort, focused on leg drive, and tried to catch whatever bumps were around.

Took the lead at 2nd beach and led the remainder of the race. :)

I used my very old, V10 Performance tonight. She's 35lbs and kinda beat up but she's never let me down. Tonight the extra weight meant I could punch through waves upwind and keep my momentum up downwind. Always fun to mix things up a bit.

Race report

Solid first half tonight. Good start, let Jan leapt out front and cause havoc with the usual leaders and had a clean run to the first turn. Pulled the lead pack until Grey Rocks then slipped back onto Gareth's wash. Gareth is paddling really well right now. We were pulling ~13 km/h into the current and he still had enough in the tank to drop in 14.7 km/h sprints every so often!

Coming into Cates I dropped off the wash so I could focus on technique. I changed out my steering cables on the weekend and hadn't taken the time to stretch them in properly. As a result, my peddles were spongy and misaligned which made steering while wash riding an interesting challenge. Decided I'd rather focus on technique than steering so I peeled off and paddled solo the rest of the race.

Tough conditions out to Maple Beach...the current was all over the place so it was a case of snakes and ladders. :)

Technically speaking, Warren was the fastest guy on the water tonight. Unfortunately he didn't factor in that in my sleep deprived, sick state I might not be able to lead him around the course like I usually do and he didn't check the course beforehand. Consequently he missed the the last turn and disqualified himself. Next time Warren, you'll win fair and square!

I think Warren, Corey and I paddled side by side for the entire race. Early on, Corey made it clear he was happy to wash ride and would not be trying to sprint past us at the finish. Warren paddled a solid race, sometimes pulling, sometimes drafting, but mostly paddling side by side and working hard! He's building up for the World Surfski Champs in Tahiti and pushing himself to get stronger and faster...I'm already worried about how much faster he's going to get!

Some nights you feel fast, some nights you get put in your place!

I had a great start and found myself in good position with Gareth and Wes...unfortunately they had a gear that I couldn't match. The first time they dropped me was at Jug island. Then Gareth went off course taking Wes with him and giving me an opportunity to cut the corner at the Bedwell Bay light. Wes and I stopped and waited for Gareth to reconnect. Warren and Chris kindly held back and waited as well...we're a very considerate group. ;)

Mid way from Jug to Lone Rock I got dropped a second time. Not sure what happened but suddenly I could not hold pace with the big guns and got dropped. I held my distance until the 5 knot can then they engaged the overdrive and took off! Well done done guys!

Race report

A fun night for my first Big Chop of the season. The westerly gave us a bit of chop to play with and kept things interesting. I dug my Ion out of storage for the first time since last summer and it took a bit of getting used to.

I had a reasonably strong start and soon found myself out front with Warren beside me. He alternated paddling side by side and directly behind me. He wasn't drafting (so he says), just "getting out of the sun". Someone didn't bring sunglasses and couldn't see when were paddling west into the setting sun. :)

It was tight racing as we grinded upwind to the barge can, then on to Royal Van, and finally turned back downwind towards Kits. Warren and I were trading waves most of the way down. On the crossing from Kits to False Creek I opened a small gap which meant Warren had no reprieve from the sun on the second upwind and gave up a little more distance.

We had little bumps to chase all the way back to the finish. Fun times!

Tough race with great pack work tonight. I opted for clean water at the start so I had to hustle to connect with the lead pack of Chris, Warren, Ty and Hugh. Hugh set a blistering pace while Chris and I did our best to hold onto his wash. Eventually he settled in and took turns pulling. As we were coming back along Jug Island, Hugh had an oops moment and capsized. Warren narrowly avoided damaging his boat on Hugh's head. ;)

Soon we had a solid pack, five across with me, Chris, Warren, Daryl and Ty. Warren started the final push with Chris and I chasing. Chris apparently had a little bit more in the tank and kept going to take line honours. Way to go Chris!

The conditions tonight were probably the best I've had for an afterwork race. Choppy, lumpy and surfable! Chris and Warren were the powerhouses off the start forcing Wes and I to reel them in as we closed on the 5 knot can. We edged them at the can then Wes powered up and took the lead while Warren and I chased him down. I closed the gap coming into Grey Rocks and pulled up beside Wes for the grind upwind to Hamber. I caught a little runner as I rounded the north end and surfed away from Wes, finally taking the lead. I held off Wes until we rounded Grey Rocks for the second time then he pulled up and put on the power. I decided to take a different line and headed for shore hoping to get the rebound bumps. Half way back to the Cove Wes decided the outside wasn't any faster and we reconnected on the shore with him taking the lead. On the final turn I caught the first useful bump and opened up a small lead. Wes powered past me to overtake and we had a sprint finish. Epic!

Criterium racing is tough but so much fun. Every turn is an opportunity to succeed...and an opportunity to fail. It's the sort of racing where after 6km, racers can finish less than a second apart.

Chris and I were only 0.3 second apart...until results were posted we didn't know who got it. Jeff and Bob did the same with only 0.3 seconds between them. Lots of other pairs were less than 2 seconds apart. Fun, tight racing!

Wash riding made all the difference for me tonight. Used Ben and Eric to get close to Warren. Used Warren to get close to Chris. Used Chris to stay near Wes. Used the corners the keep things tight and had Wes and Chris the corners against me in turn. Everyone took the lead at some point and made it fun. :)

Dryland training is paying off. Started second from last and managed to catch everyone, and open up time on Chris (who started last). It helped that a strong breeze filled in so there was side chop in Indian Arm which benefits stable grinders like me. Need to put in some volume and log additional miles though. My technique (such as it is) fell apart in the second half as I got tired. Over a minute off my 2014 pace so lots of room for improvement!

Awesome to see Warren and Daryl so close (0.4 sec!) and both are nipping at Chris' heels!

Second time back on the water. No additional water time for practice but did get a couple dryland sessions in since last week. I lined up behind Chris and used him for a quick pull off the line then swung into the sweet spot between him and Wes once he got tired. Managed to hold onto Wes' wash all the out to Lone Rock but couldn't hold position through the turn. I was outside and while Wes pushed wide around Lone Rock, Chris apexed the corner, tucked in tight and came out of the turn ahead of both of us. Wes accelerated to reel in Chris and I got dropped. Managed some sustained speed and closed a four boat gap on Chris then fell back again. Need to train more!

Race report

First race of the year for me...and the first one always hurts. :)

I launched nice and early to get a good warmup and promptly broke my foot plate. Back to shore, ran to the car to grab tools, quickly adjusted the foot plate, stashed the tools and made to the start line with very little time to spare. I'd torn the bracket that holds the foot plate to the rails so I was okay to push but I was worried I'd tear it completely off if I pulled too hard.

Alan and Eric were on fire for the trip out and it took everything I had to stay with them out to Pt Grey. The sandbar factored in to the return trip (for us heavy guys anyway) and I was able to open a small lead when they got bogged down.

It was great seeing the solid chase pack of skis (Peter, Bob, Reivers, John and Paul) duking it out. I didn't get the memo that it was fat ski day so I was paddling my V10 while the group was in an assortment of 19" skis. Sorry guys, unfair advantage on my part.

It wasn't an epic downwind but it was great racing regardless! Bob, Ian, and their legion of volunteers put on an excellent event and everything went according to plan...or if there were issues, they hid them well! :)

I made my usual mistake at big surfski events and was not aggressive enough on the pre-start setup. I figured the top dogs pushing the line would get pulled back (no luck) and started a couple boat lengths back from the leaders. Still had a strong start and quickly found myself jockeying with Dion and Eric going into the hotspot. Managed to drop them both and focus on reeling in the nearest guys.

Had a great back and forth duel with Brian Kummer for most of the race...these SoCal guys don't give up! Actually, no one gives up...every time I thought I had pulled on either DK (outside) or Corey (inside) they would hunker down and pull away again. I wasn't able to catch Corey but a good line from Watts point to Squamish got me well ahead of Don. Finally got him!

Typical mid week race tonight. Starts off with little bumps, gets really good near the San Mateo bridge, and finally a long slog up the channel to Bair Island. :)

We were a little late getting on the water tonight so we missed the strongest breeze but that didn't stop us from getting some bumps. I had trouble in the first half with the softer, mushy stuff, but had fun after the bridge when the bumps got bigger and I could keep my speed up.

Daryl had a great first half...which was very frustrating for me as I had to work to keep up! Finally got past him and opened up a small lead in the second half.

Greg led a bunch of the fleet astray by turning at the 12 marker. It didn't seem right but it wasn't until Zach slowed down and expressed doubt that I was sure. We turned back down and headed downwind to the correct channel. Nice little runners for part of the flat water section.

Solid race with Wes today. I had a solid start but the bump didn't materialize until Home Valley so I was sluggish for a good chunk of leg 1 and finished deep.

Wes made up for it and passed a half dozen guys on leg 2 to put us back into sixth, powering hard through the flat water to Drano lake.

There was some bump on leg 3 but I stuck to the shore to get out of the current in the hopes or reeling in Bob. I made ground but not enough to catch him. Apparently it paid to stick to shore as Kirk made up huge time on me by going even closer and staying in.

Wes powered through leg 4 (found a couple sandbars along the way) and we finished a solid sixth.

It was another challenging year for Round Bowen. The race start got moved up 30min at the race briefing which cut into everyone's warm up time and final prep so I think it was a shock when we headed south out of Snug Cove and found ourselves hammering upwind into a 2' chop. As we progressed around to the south exposed side it became a washing machine which made things very interesting for those with small rudders...which I think was pretty much everyone.

Wes and I took the inshore route and tried to squeeze some runs from the chaotic water. Pretty much everyone else decided that was a bad idea and headed offshore for cleaner water. Eventually we cleared the south tip and surfed little runs to Tunstill Bay. Then it was a flat slog until Cates Bay and the upwind grind home.

In the flats I alternated between wash riding Wes and playing the current to get ahead of him. We had a very social race. If one of us fell back to drink, eat, etc. the other slowed down to let him catc

Race report

Another fun, sunny evening on English Bay. Corey launched off the line, opened an early lead and just kept adding to it. I couldn't get over to his line quick enough as I had the power starting duo of Dion and Chris to get around. Dion might only have paddled three times this year but he hasn't forgotten how to start and he had the Evo II flying off the line. As a defensive measure he was tossing buckets of water into the air about head height...I'll bring a mask and snorkle next race. ;)

Eventually dropped the pack but couldn't reel in Corey. He's still new to racing in the bay so I'd hoped that his lack of familiarity with the course would slow him down...looked like he would overshoot the second turn for awhile. No luck, George bombed out to the RVYC mark so that no one would miss it. Guess I'll just have to get faster. :)

All in all, not a bad race. The race started off with the lead doubles opening a good gap and the lead singles trying to decide who to draft. I think Kirk, Don, Ben and Eric, and I all took turns at some point in the first few kms. Eventually we split apart with Kirk, Don and the Fitzes chasing a cruiser in deep water while 2Fast hugged the shore. Eventually we all decided that 2Fast had the better line and tried to reconnect. Kirk and Don successfully got into drafting position but I didn't have the reserves to chase. The Fitzes tried to help me out with a ride but I couldn't match their pace...I hadn't had any exercise for a week due to work so my cardio was suffering and I couldn't keep the rate up. Then we turned the corner and got into the side chop and I started feeling better. Then we turned upwind and it became a grind...that I can do! I managed distance with the lead pack most of the way home and almost reeled in Kirk when he dropped off the pack. Next time!

Race report

It was a fun race tonight. We don't usually get the same depth of Surfski talent at Big Chop as we do at TNR but Corey came out to play and made it interesting.

He was late arriving so he didn't get to set up his ski (had to reach with his toes to steer) and he didn't know the course. I was tempted to do what we used to do to a young Wes Hammer many years ago at TNR and send him off course, but Corey was smart enough not to fall for it. He hung out just far enough in front that he could confirm that I was doing the course I told him to do. :)

We had a solid start and Corey eased up enough that I could washride part way to the first turn. He even dropped back and sat on my wash for a bit before deciding that a) I'm slow and b) I throw a lot of water on my exit. From the first turn onwards Corey led by 1-2 boat lengths until the final leg. I held with him while I could but with ~1km left, he opened up and took off.

All good fun!

Race report

It was a fun start tonight. Norman was off like a rocket so Dion went chasing after him. I thought we had agreed on a leisurely start but no one was listening. I reeled in Norman and Dion and kept charging past them. Dion was able to get on my wash but Norman was left behind in no man's land. I had high hopes that Dion was going to challenge me for line honours tonight but it wasn't meant to be. We got to Kits yacht club and that was all Dion had in the tank...apparently he was partying pretty hard on the weekend and still suffering. Next time Dion!

Norman had a stellar race and held off all challenges from the chase pack (Bob, Warren, Chris, Daryl). The old guys should have been working together as a pack to reel him in. 30 second pulls, everyone takes a turn, you'll get some good speed!

Race report

Fun race tonight and big turnout! I ended up starting in the second row because there wasn't enough space on the line for everyone. Started a little slow to give the first row a chance to spread out then shot the gap between Bob and Jim to get open water. Chris and Marshall jumped onto my wash and brought Rob with them so I had some buddies. I backed down a bit once they settled on my wash and bumped up the pace a bit when the occasional bump popped up. Eventually Chris and Marshall fell off the wash but Rob was able to push by them and take their spot...but I didn't know that. I was slacking off a bit, thinking I'd dropped everyone, when a red bow popped up beside me. Surprise! Rob's a tough one and he stuck to my wash for the entire second lap and managed to stay with me to the finish!

Race report

It wasn't as windy as we hoped for but it was a fun, tough race. The elite group lined up on the right side of line and quickly pushed out front at the start. I worked over from the centre to join the chase pack but quickly found myself wallowing so I swung out to the side and started powering past a handful of paddlers. All too quickly the upwind section was done and we started downwind. I managed to cut Dion's lead on me down to a couple boat lengths at the hot spot and in the small bumps I was able to close the gap and pull up beside him. I need to work on my surfing skills...I would catch up with Dion, lose focus and suddenly he had another 2 boat lengths on me. At one point he was easily 500m ahead. I managed to reel him in before the 12 marker then realized I was too far right and had to turn hard to make the mark putting Dion ahead again. The wind faded, allowing me to reel him in again. Flat water was good to me as I picked off Dion, Rich and Tyson on the flats!

I had a stellar upwind except for that pesky river barge. I saw the barge coming and made two faulty assumptions: 1) it would pass Gold Dust Rock before I got there. 2) The competition would follow me!

Instead Jonas and Kirk split off and went south of the barge and ended up rounding the rock while I was stuck on the far side of the barge...lesson learned! Jonas quickly reeled in Kirk by riding the barge wash and I was able to make ground and catch Kirk on the downwind. Jonas was too fast for me though and opened up the gap a bit more on me. Next year!

While we were missing a bunch of the usual suspects today we did see some faces from the past. Ty Gee was out after a multi year absence and didn't lose a beat...he was mixing it up with Marshall and Curtis in the double and making Paul work too hard.

I misinterpreted Bryan's directions and took the fleet south of the green marker...oops. Just a little bit of follow the leader!

I settled in pretty early and focused on technique as much as possible...the next couple weeks are all surf sessions so I figured some technique work was important. It was a beautiful day in English bay (could have used a bit more wind) but at least we weren't in False Creek. Kudos to the race organizers for switching up the course and keeping us out of the high traffic zone in the creek.

Race report

After months waiting on the rack to be repaired I finally had my V10 SE back on the water tonight. I'd forgotten what it was like to have a ultra-light boat (my SE is half the weight of my Performance layup) and I'd also forgot what a small rudder felt like. Can we say twitchy?

I thought I had a good start but I was on the wrong side and backed off too soon not realizing that Denis and Warren were ripping it up on the north side. Awesome seeing them step it up a notch! I settled in to cruising pace then realized they were four boat lengths ahead of me...oops! Bumped it up a notch and caught them at the green mark. Took my time, chased little bumps and got around the second turn in first. Once I'd opened up a couple boat lengths I settled down and tried working on some of the technique stuff that Oscar taught us on the weekend. Had a little trouble working on technique in the side chop but once I got around the RVYC mark it was mostly downhill and much easier to work on it.

Race report

Ugh, tonight I fell apart! I had a solid first half with Wes and Gareth drafting me then turned the mark at Cates park and could not stay connected to save my life...it was ugly!

Eric and Gareth had a super strong start with Wes and I coming in from the sides to wash ride. After leaving Deep Cove I pulled up on Eric and Wes moved over to my left hip and we settled in for a solid pace out to Grey Rocks putting in occasional pushes to keep Eric and Gareth on their toes. I had hoped to keep Eric as a buffer between us and Gareth but he hit the wall hard and dropped off allowing Gareth to move over and join up with Wes and I.

After rounding the mark I couldn't keep the boat moving and rapidly lost ground to Wes and Gareth. Then Rob caught and passed me which convinced me I must be dragging weeds...no luck. Stopped and backpaddled but didn't see anything in the water. By I had lost Rob, Bruce and Chris...and Mike was trying hard to get past me as well. Good job guys!

Definitely not one of my better performances. I couldn't get my boat speed up to save my life and it felt like I was dragging a tire.

Cam and Mike had a awesome race and dominated the fleet. They were moving fast and looked good doing it. Chris did his best to draft me around the course but I wasn't having any of that...put in a good push coming out of a turn and opened just enough of a gap to make him work for it! Marshall and Gary had a excellent last leg and really pushed hard to close the gap on the leaders...way to go guys!

Next up, Jericho Iron!

Race report

First Big Chop of the season and it was a fun one! High tide was 20min after the start so the water was very swirly with rivers, back eddies and lots of motor boat wash. Eric sprinted off the line to open up a gap then settled down so Gareth and I and I could join up. Midway to the first turn I pulled up and took over pulling the lead pack. It was a very social group and we stayed stacked up for most of the course. The relative positions would occasionally change as we each caught little bumps here and there. Gareth was held in check by his lack of local knowledge so he had to hold back. Before the last turn he tried to open up a gap but Eric and I were able to hold the pace and maintain position. As we rounded the last turn Eric and Gareth got tangled up and had to brace so I backed it down and let them catch up. Big mistake, I should have powered up and made a run for the finish. Instead I waited too long to go into my finish sprint and they were able to squeeze me out. Oops!

Race report

First TNR of the season. The pre-start maneuvering consisted of everyone playing up how out of shape they are which indicated that there would be some tight racing to be had.

The course was from DCCK to the North 5 knot can then Lone Rock and back. Despite all the claims of being out of shape, the lead pack (Dion, Gareth, Wes, Jim and me) maintained pretty good pace to the 5 knot marker. Dion broke his foot board (so he claims anyway) and dropped off and Jim's training program of 1000 x 10 secs wasn't up to the task of holding the pace. I pushed on to Lone Rock with Gareth on my wash and Wes not far behind. The north breeze kicked up a little bit of chop...not really surfing conditions but enough to make you work hard trying to squeeze out a bit more speed. On the return trip I let Gareth pull for a bit a couple times then Ben and John crept up the outside. Gareth pushed to jump on their wash and then pushed past them for a sprint finish. Well done gentlemen!

Race report

Second attempt at a SUP race! The goal was to stay ahead of Warren and Chris...succeeded on one but not the other.

I managed to stay with Chris for a little while but eventually he pulled away and slowly opened up distance on me. I guess it pays off to train for a race instead of jumping on a new board just before the start!

Next time Chris!

Had a good back and forth with Ian. He got by me at Jug Island and held the lead around Lone Rock but I think I had a better line on the return to Deep Cove and managed to make up the distance and put a little in the bank.

Fun racing...might actually have to get a board one of these days.

Race report

Hard race tonight! I think there was an eddy pushing everyone into the south shore so the skis nearest the dock got log jammed (mental note, line up to the right of the outriggers so they can't use their amas to push you over!) and I started second row again. I think if the Big Chop is going to continue averaging 90 racers / night they need to do a split start like TNR. Just not enough room on the line.

Dion has gotten his fitness back! He opened a solid lead on me off the line and held it until midway between the red mark and Kits yacht club. Got beside him at Kits and ran side by side to the barge before I could finally get ahead of him. After working way too hard to catch and pass Dion, Cam and Mike caught up in the double ski and proceeded to push me the rest of the race. Every time I thought I had them beat they would surge back up beside me.

Super tight to the finish...mere inches at the line. Great job guys!

Race report

I went way too hard off the start...yep, the boys are back and they brought a friend!

Jim and Eric have returned and they had their usual ballistic launch off the start. To make it more fun, Corey Hamilton (I'm told he's #2 behind Adam on the national squad) was there and not only is he even faster than Jim and Eric but he has the stamina to keep it going.

Eric was the first to fall off and unfortunately he did it as I was going around the outside of him so I got dropped as well. Jim was able to hold on a little while longer but by the 5 knot can he had dropped back to ride my wash.

I tried to hold the gap from getting any larger but it wasn't happening so plugged away with Eric on my wash until Hamber when I squeezed him at the turn and opened up a small gap.

Paddled solo most of the way back then Cam and Mike put the afterburners on, reeled me in and passed me 200m before the finish. That's twice they've done that...need a new strategy or better fitness!

Race report

My first SUP race ever. Aside from the fact that I was working twice as hard to go half as fast as my surfski it was still fun. The SUP racing format has a lot of turns so the race favours well rounded paddlers who have good straight line speed and the technical board handling to spin the board on a dime. My straight line speed wasn't bad (for a first timer on a 12' x 33" board) but I'll need to work on turns. You know your turns are bad when the longer boards are turning faster but you're catching them afterwards.

Chris snagged a Werner demo blade for me and Pacific Boarder happily loaned me the board. The Werner paddle was a lot better than the two piece demo blades I'd used earlier...need to figure out exactly which model it was. The board was super stable which was good for power application but had very little glide which meant a lot of power needed to be applied.

Might have to try some boards out!

Race report

It was touch and go but I managed to sneak out of work for the Big Chop tonight. Not only did we get a little bit of breeze and some chop but we had a pretty good turnout of surfskis to play including Bob Woodman making the trek down from Vernon in preparation for the Oceanman.

The start was a little crowded...especially because Marshall decided to barge his way to the front and position himself in front of me. I'd be annoyed except he blocked Bob W. as well so it was a fair start between us. Warren and Chris both had great starts and launched off the line...maybe emulating Jim and Eric who've been absent lately?

The course had lots of chop and we had upwind, downwind and sidewind to play in. Bob W. stayed with me the whole way around so the last leg was a wave for wave push to the finish. Great fun!

Tonight was the first time since the Wildside Relay that I actually felt like I was paddling okay. Technique was okay, power was good and I felt connected to the boat...all

Tough race tonight even though we were missing the big dogs. No Jim, Eric, Ken, Gareth, Mike or Cam tonight...but Warren brought his A game!

Marshall and Gary were looking fast off the line with Jeff tucked onto their wash starting on the right side. Warren and I started on the left side and our respective packs joined together just before the 5 knot can. Marshall and Gary had the cleanest rounding but couldn't hold the pace so Warren and I slowly dropped the pack. Warren matched me all the way around and even managed a few tricks (paddle spinning) along the way. I eased off a bit near the end so he could pull even and make the finish sprint a little more fun. All that time training with Team Think (and the forced rest of driving 10,000 kms) has paid off for him!

The paddle was solid albiet a little slow (paddled my heavy V10 because I don't mind beaching it). Landed on the beach third behind Gareth (looking fast in a Carbon Uno) and Mike and Cam (flying in the Elite double).

The first run was hard and slow which is to be expected given I haven't run since this race last year.

The swim was equally slow but at least it gave my knees a break. I kept hunting for shallow water because I can run through water faster than I can swim it!

Had I been thinking clearly I would have stopped after the swim and gotten a ride back to my boat on the safety/camera boat but instead I crawled up the hill and began the second run (more of a walk/jog). Flats and uphill weren't bad but my knees were screaming on the downhill.

On the bright side there were lots of paddlers happy to finally beat me! :-)

Race report

Fun racing tonight, we actually had a little chop for the Big Chop!

Jim and Eric set the pace early on with a blistering start then backed it down to let me catch up as we left the flat water in False Creek and entered English Bay. The first leg out to Second Beach initially had bumps coming in off the left bow then moved onto our beam as our course clocked right to get to the mark. From there we cut south to the barge can so the bumps were coming in on our right side...lots of running the troughs to keep the speed up. From the barge can we turned east to the red entrance marker for the downwind leg. It was mushy and slow so I had to run steep angles zig zagging downwind to keep the speed up. Eric and Jim stayed close the whole time! Eric displayed his rough water chops last time he was out but it's the first time Jim has kept up in the rough stuff...watch out! Trevor's extra time in the ski is paying off, he passed Bob and wasn't far behind Eric...one more guy to watch out fo

Race report

Hmm, I'm pretty sure I did the long course but I'm not about to dispute Karly...might get hurt.

We had a super competitive pack tonight. Ken and I planned to take it easy but that didn't last long. Eric, Jim and Wes showed their sprinting abilities off the line then backed down to join in with me, Ken, Mike and Cam. We set a pretty strong pace out to Jug Island with Ken and I taking turns pulling the pack. The order pretty much reversed itself at Jug when we did our mandatory remount. The young guys have figured out their remounts...they're fast! The pack reformed again with Ken and I taking the lead out to the 5 knot can. I put in a good sprint to keep Eric on the outside and the pack spread out a bit so I rested briefly after rounding the can so the pack could reform. The return was much the same until the south 5 knot can when Cam and Mike pushed forward on the double. 500m out it was still anyones game so it was a sprint finish of attrition. Cam and Mike lead the way!

It took a few tries to get the start off but eventually we got going. I think I was two boat lengths back from the line when the start horn went but it didn't take long to clear the pack and get to business. Started on the right side with Dave and slowly worked left as we hammered upwind, catching Kirk but not quite closing the gap on Carter, Austin and DJ. Had fun threading the needle as the Laser NA's course overlapped with ours.

Had a hard surf run back trading waves with Kirk the entire way. Any time one of us caught one the other missed it was a three boat length lead...makes you work hard not to miss!

All in all a good race!

Race report

Tonight's goal was to work on technique. The video from the TNR this week showed some pretty ugly arm paddling near Hamber and I wasn't as connected as I should have been so I wanted to race my own race and focus on using the core. There were a few slips but generally speaking I did okay. I think I was able to hold ~13km/h for most of the race and it didn't seem frantic...probably because I wasn't struggling to keep up with Jim, Ken, Gareth or Ian tonight!

Race report

I was hoping for a more relaxed race tonight...then Ian showed up. Just what I need after doing sprint work with Ken on Monday! Ian took off at the start then relaxed a bit so i could jump on his wash for the ride out to the 5 knot marker. After the turn I went more right thinking the water was faster and ended up pulling ahead so he put a quick sprint in to reconnect on my wash. Kept a nice easy pace until just before Hamber...then he dropped me really fast and opened up a gap that just got bigger. Looking at the video afterwards it's easy to see why...horrible technique on my part! I wasn't connected and my arms were flailing. Time to focus back in on technique and drill work!

Race report

I was hoping for an easy paddle tonight. Did a solo outrigger time trial on Sat and then a two hour OC6 workout on the Sunday. My shoulder was not happy with me! Might need to take time off from outrigger again.

My first clue that I wasn't going to get to slack off today was Jim's response when I suggested I would draft him around the course..."No! I want a hard workout!"

He blew away everyone at the start (Eric is AWOL, Nationals?) so I settled in behind him after the start and waited for him to slow down at the 5 knot marker so I could pull up beside him. He settled in on my wash for until we got back to the north 5 knot can (good thing Jim was paying attention to the course...I forgot).

Jim made his move early and I was content to let him go...but Bob heckled me from the safety boat so I decided to ignore the pain and try to reel in Jim. Managed to make it a race of inches starting from a boat length back...not a bad push for a guy with sketchy technique and a bum sho

Race report

Great weather for tonight's race...assuming it was March!

Felt sore and tired on the warm up out to Lone Rock...definitely felt the OC6 race on Sat and the surfski race on Sunday. The pack got off to a strong start heading out to Racoon Island and settled in with Eric on my left, Warren on my right and a large pack right behind us. The first lap was strong and no one attempted any breakaways. On the second loop I decided to make the guys work a bit and bumped up the speed a bit to see how long they could hold on. Eric blew up (cramped up, he'd been racing K1 on the weekend) but Warren was able to stay with me and he was doing his best not to draft me...he's figured out that's how you get stronger! We kept up a good pace until the turn at the 5 knot can then started a series of little bump ups until the end. Great finish!

From the video it looked like a great race between the chase pack guys with Jeff putting on a last minute push to sneak by Mike. Fun stuff!

Race report

Fun racing tonight. Didn't race on the weekend so I wasn't as tired as last week. We had a large pack for most of the way with me in the lead, Jim and Eric each taking a side wash and Dion in the draft position with a bunch more boats right behind him. We had a solid pull until part way between Maple beach and Hamber...I slacked off to ride the Bowen double for a bit so Eric dropped the hammer and opened up a couple boat lengths. Jim and I pursued, closed the gap and pulled back up beside him. I thought Jim might sneak ahead when he cut the corner and ducked under the private docks but he backed down a bit and we lined up again in the Cove. Then it became a waiting game...who would start the sprint finish? I'm not sure who went first but we all pushed hard. Eric backed down first and then with about two boat lengths to go Jim backed off as well. Fun stuff!

Race report

Tough race today. I like that the double skis went five minutes ahead of the singles...there was a lot less contact between boats and paddles! The big guns from Vancouver Island came out and put a world of hurt on the lower mainland crowd. After a strong start and a bit of a jam up at the 5 knot can Jan and Gareth set out to lead to single skis. I set up on Jan's left hip, Gareth was on the right and Jim wiggled into the sweet spot directly behind Jan. We maintained the diamond formation until just before Cates park. I couldn't hold the pace (heart rate spiked, had to back down) and dropped off. Jim sprinted into my spot, held it just long enough to say I'd been dropped then got shot out as well! I picked him up at the barges with Kirk hanging on my tail and paddled together until just before Admiralty Pt where Jim hit the wall. Kirk managed to hold on all the way back to Deep Cove so we finished off yet another 19km race with sprint! Good job Kirk!

Race report

It was a tough race tonight with a lot of the big guns out. I had a solid start but spent the rest of the race "going uphill". As the pack settled in after the start I was on the far right with the Fitz's to my left. Unfortunately they weren't able to hold the pace as we approached the 5 knot can and we got dropped by the lead pack. First hill...Jug Island. Managed to reconnect with the pack and as I was passing Ken he jammed his paddle into my rudder...dead stop! Hill #2...Lone Rock. Managed to get back on Ken's wash at Lone Rock then pulled up beside him. A gap opened up between us and the leaders (Jim, Gareth, Ben and Eric) so I pushed hard and pulled up on Gareth's wash to rest a bit. The problem with being the outside guy is that you get pushed around a lot. Every time Ben veered into the group I'd miss a couple strokes to avoid hitting Gareth, fall back and have to play catch up again. The best solution is to keep Ben and Eric behind me...they don't play nice. ;-)

Fifth race in nine days...might be tired. I had no start to speak of...everyone just took off on me. Slowly reeled in Mike and Cam in the double with Dion on their hip at the 5 knot can. Dion moved over to my wash and we picked up Eric just before Jug island. Unfortunately I didn't have the reserves to bump it up and chase after Jim and Gareth. Dropped Dion and Eric on the way back but Cam and Mike snuck up on me at the finish...if they'd been a little quieter they might have snuck by! :-)

Great job by Gareth and Jim. Both of whom were paddling Think boats...coincidence?

Race report

Not a great race tonight. I just couldn't get connected to my blade...felt weak and sloppy. That said, getting dropped at the start allowed me to see how well everyone else is paddling. I don't know what happened to Jim lately but he's flying! Eric was out on the Protosauraus tonight and probably would have beat me if the lead pack hadn't stalled at the first turn (allowing me to catch up) and if I hadn't inadvertently used a SUP to scrape him off the pack. I'd like to claim I did it on purpose (like Ben would) but it was an accident...next time I'll do it on purpose! Dion showed that he's been sandbagging the last month. He had no problem holding me off for most of the race. I suspect it's because he had the GoPro on the bow...had to look good for his mom. The final beat down of the night was courtesy of the Fitzmaurices. Cam was stroking/steering again and they were fast! Mike called up the rate at the finish and they pulled away easily...lucky for me a wave helped me out!

Race report

Unlike my previous DHCs I was actually near the start line at the start this year. I didn't push the line quite as much as Daryl so I started a boat length back but still in good position. Didn't realize that the two fastest double skis were nearby and found myself trying to jump onto their wash (along with Dion and Gabe). Daryl called out something along the lines of "it's a long race, don't blow up!" which was sound advice. I backed down, let Gabe and Dion continue chasing the doubles and settled into a good pace. Gabe stayed on the doubles but Dion eventually blew up and dropped back. DJ pulled up beside me and I was quite content to run beside him for awhile until he veered off to the right. He saw a single rowing shell moving fast and jumped on for the ride...thought about trying to close the gap but decided I'd explode. Spent the remainder of the race with Don, Kirk and the BBOP OC6. Hit the wall about 3km before the finish but managed to scoot past Don at the line.

Race report

This was a very entertaining race. Two laps of a 2.5 km course meant lots of sprinting, jockeying for position at corners and the occasional dirty trick. Ben and Eric pulled a Crazy Ivan on first loop and successfully brought Jim and me to near stop. I returned the favour at the next turn and tried to take them past the mark boat to let the rest of the pack sneak in. Jim was conserving energy and drafting whomever looked fastest at the time. Warren and Chris were jumping into the fray whenever they could. Cam and Mike were pulling hard on the outside and going fast...maybe because Cam was steering/stroking? I really messed up the last turn and ended up on the outside of the pinwheel (I think Ben and Eric noticed us slowing down to cut inside and shut the door on us). I tried to swing wide on them and sneak past outside their peripheral vision but Jim started his finish sprint before I was ready...it was a hard pull to get back into the mix with Jim, Ben and Eric. Good Fun!

Fun racing tonight. It's always a challenge when you don't start as a group and you don't know who started where and how far ahead they are! Luckily Gareth started 10 sec in front of me so I got to use him as a rabbit. Managed to reel him in before we got to Jug Island but then he took a tighter line around the island and got back beside me. We chose different lines on the return trip which in hindsight was a tactical mistake on my part. I wasn't super confident I had the better line so I should have gone with him and covered. Instead he pulled ahead and put a little gap on me. Lesson learned for next time!

That was a hard race. Greg and Tracy set a blistering pace with Gabe on their tail. Eric, Jason and I pursued but couldn't hold with them...heck I couldn't even hold with Eric and Jason! Managed to reengage with them after the swimming platform turn and enjoyed some solid pack work on the north bound leg. I was hoping to continue as a pack to the finish (way easier on the shoulder) but Eric snuck off to the right, bumped it up a bit and slowly pulled away on us. Lucky for me Jason picked up some weeds and let me get away. All in all a good race.

The big guns were out in force and showing their speed at the start. Dion, Gareth, Jim, Ben and Eric all launched out on me and set a quick pace. It took a few extra strokes but eventually I got up to speed and started reeling them in. Dion was quick to back down and drop onto my wash once I pulled up beside him. From there I moved over to Gareth, Ben and Eric in the double and Jim on the right. The pack settled down pretty quick so I bumped it up to try and keep my bow out on Gareth. I'm told Ben was quick to try and move onto my wash and squeezed out Gareth so I got to the hotspot uncontested. Picked up a pretty sweet IceBreaker toque. Spent the rest of the race taking turns with Gareth. Ken pulled hard to come from behind and join us before the 5 knot can...so we upped the pace and tried to break him. Had a great push to the end with Gareth and scooted by him just before the finish. Pretty sure that's the first time I've beaten him...hopefully not the last!

Used my heavier ski today and definitely noticed the slower acceleration...or at least that's what I'm telling myself. Eric started five seconds ahead of me and had a blistering start. i couldn't match his acceleration initially but I was still gaining speed 250m in and eventually reeled him in. He made a smart turn at the halfway mark, got inside and even with me for the return trip and held there all the way back. If it hadn't been for the traffic jam at the last turn i think we would have been side by side right through the finish (and Jim wouldn't have made up the precious seconds behind us).

Started dropping off before I was half way along Alder Bay and didn't feel like I had much juice on the return trip. Got squeezed out by Jeremy on the last corner (he's veering left, I'm going for the inside gap...nope, he's veered right and closed the gap...brakes!) but had a strong finish bump (14.5 km/h) to get myself out of the hole and try to close the gap on Scott. Couldn't hold it to the finish line though. Hope it's just that I'm tired and not that I'm losing fitness that quickly!

It was awesome to see so many K1s and surfskis racing on the creek this morning. I made up a little ground on Jim but didn't have it in me to reel him in. Given he trounced me the day before at Lake Samish I'll just have to be happy I didn't lose ground to him. Graham looked relaxed and strong as he passed me...I think he was just out for an easy cruise.
